These lizards are known for their colourful and vibrant skin. They have brown and grey bodies, orange scales along both sides, and yellow bellies. The males are usually are more colourful, which intensifies during mating season.

Chinese Crocodile Lizards are precocial, which means they can feed and look after themselves from the moment they are born, and their parents will not raise them.
