The Sulcata tortoise (Centrochelys sulcata) can often be seen digging burrows. These tunnel systems can reach over ten feet underground! However, the majority are only 2.5 feet deep. The tortoise will use these tunnels to escape the heat.
Unlike other tortoise species, the Sulcata tortoise will actively seek refuge from colder weather, which makes them much more adaptable. Other species of tropical tortoise would freeze when presented with cooler temperatures.
The Sulcata Tortoise eats grass, leaves, flowers and cactus pads
The Sahara desert and the Sahel.
