Fun Fact
Blue and Gold Macaws are very expressive, using vocals and their bodies: fluffing, bowing, head bobbing and blushing to communicate.
Diet & Habitat
They eat large seeds, nuts, blossoms, buds, leaves and berries. Their beak is very powerful, as it has adapted to help them to manipulate nuts and other food items. Blue and Gold Macaws (Ara ararauna) are found in northern South America, where they inhabit forests, marshlands and savannahs.
Behaviour & Incubation
Blue and Gold Macaws usually pair for life; however, if they lose their mate they sometimes replace them. The breeding season is from January to July, when the female will lay 2 – 3 eggs which are incubated for around 26 days. They nest in tree hollows, quite high up to avoid predation. Chicks stay with their parents for 3 months.
Lifespan
The average lifespan in the wild is around 30 years, and 50 in captivity.
