Indian Blue Peafowl

Indian Blue Peafowl

Peafowl are large ground-feeding birds with moderately strong legs and three forward-facing toes with one pointing backward. While they nest on the ground, they prefer to roost in trees for safety. Despite their size, peafowl are capable of brief bursts of flight and gliding, but they rely on their legs for movement most of the time. The males, known as peacocks, are famous for their spectacular display of iridescent upper tail feathers, which can extend up to 1.5 metres long and are raised using much shorter tail feathers beneath them. In contrast, females, called peahens, have more muted brown plumage with green neck feathers, a white belly, and a crest on their heads. Their drab colours help them blend into their surroundings while nesting. Peafowl are highly alert birds, frequently scanning their environment for potential dangers.

Diet

Peafowl are omnivorous, feeding on a variety of plant and animal matter. Their diet consists of seeds, fruits, flower buds, bamboo shoots, and grains, alongside small mammals, lizards, insects, and even young snakes, including cobras. Termites are a particular favourite. To aid digestion, they ingest small pebbles, which help grind up food. They need a steady water supply to survive.
Fun Fact Icon

FUN FACT

Peafowl do not bathe in water as wet feathers can weigh them down; instead, they take dust baths to remove parasites. Peafowl have a distinctive wailing call, which becomes more frequent before rainfall. They are early roosters, heading to tall trees before dusk while calling and bugling loudly as they ascend. Males do not display their tail feathers during high winds, as it affects their balance. Peafowl play a role in maintaining ecological balance by controlling populations of venomous snakes, insects, and lizards.
Habitat Icon

HABITAT

Peafowl are native to the Indian subcontinent, particularly in the deciduous forests, cultivated lands, and villages of Southern India and Sri Lanka. They thrive in dry grasslands, open forests, and scrubland near water sources. Though often found in the wild, peafowl have been domesticated in various regions and have established feral populations worldwide. While they are ground dwellers, they roost high in trees at night to avoid predators such as tigers, leopards, wild dogs, and jackals.
