Patagonian Conure

Patagonian Conure

Patagonian conures – also known as burrowing parrots – are highly social birds that form strong bonds within their flocks. They are known for their loud, raucous calls, which serve as a key method of communication. These medium-sized parrots are the largest of the conure species, reaching up to 46 cm in length, with long, tapered tails making up nearly half their body length. Their plumage features earthy tones, with olive-brown heads, yellow and red markings on their abdomen, and blue-tinted tail feathers.

FUN FACT

Patagonian conures are extremely vocal, producing distinct and far-reaching calls that can carry for kilometres. Their alarm calls are particularly loud, and they use shrieking sounds to communicate. In addition to their vocal abilities, they are highly intelligent and social, often forming lifelong bonds.
Habitat Icon

HABITAT

Native to South America, Patagonian conures thrive in dry scrublands, open grasslands, savannas, and arid regions. They are primarily found in central and southeastern Argentina, with isolated populations in Chile. Some groups migrate to southern Uruguay in winter. These birds are expert burrowers, nesting in large colonies within cliffs and riverbanks, where they excavate intricate tunnel systems for shelter and breeding. Although adaptable, their numbers have declined due to habitat loss and past capture for the pet trade. Fortunately, conservation efforts have helped stabilise their population in recent years.
