Red Eyed Glossy Starling
Starling flight is fast and direct, and they walk and run confidently on the ground. These birds, also known as Asian glossy starlings, are often seen perching on telephone wires, fence posts, and buildings, usually in large, noisy flocks. Adults have dark, metallic green feathers that can appear almost black or purple in certain light, while juveniles are dark grey-brown with heavily streaked white bellies. They are known for their striking red eyes, though some populations in the Nicobar Islands have pale irises. They measure about 20 cm in length and weigh between 50–60 g.
Diet
Asian glossy starlings are primarily fruit eaters, feeding on a variety of fruits including figs, papayas, bananas, and mangoes. They also eat berries, nuts, and nectar from fruiting trees. Occasionally, they catch insects like beetles, caterpillars, and grasshoppers, as well as spiders and snails. While they often forage in treetops, they will also pick fallen fruits from the ground and even catch flying insects mid-air.
FUN FACT
Asian glossy starlings are highly social birds that often roost in urban areas. Their roosting flocks can include up to 15,000 birds and may mix with other species like common mynas and white-vented mynas. Before settling in for the night, these birds perform impressive aerial displays, twisting and turning in unison – this may help deter predators.
HABITAT
Native to Southeast and South Asia, the Asian glossy starling is fairly common. It lives in forests, mangroves, coastal vegetation, secondary growth areas, plantations, and gardens. These birds adapt well to human environments and are often found in cities, towns, parks, and farmland. They usually remain in lowland areas up to 700 meters in elevation. During the fruiting season, their numbers can increase significantly, forming large feeding flocks. In overcast weather, they sometimes pause their feeding to gather on rooftops in groups of 50 to 60 birds, while during roosting periods, flocks of up to 500 birds have been seen.
LIFE SPAN
2 – 3 years.
