Turkey Vulture
Turkey vultures are scavengers with an incredible sense of smell. Though they have earned a bad reputation for feasting on dead animals, they play an important role in keeping their environment clean. Their strong digestive system allows them to digest almost anything, including carcasses infected with diseases like anthrax, tuberculosis, and rabies. By consuming infected animals, they prevent these diseases from spreading to other wildlife. Turkey vultures are large, dark raptors, and from a distance, their appearance can resemble that of a wild turkey, which is where they get their name. Up close, they have a dark brown plumage above, with a bare, red head. Their distinctive flying style involves soaring with their wings held slightly raised in a "V" shape, often gliding low while sniffing for carrion. They also ride thermals to gain higher vantage points, using their excellent sense of smell to detect fresh carcasses from miles away. This keen olfactory ability, due to their large olfactory lobe, enables them to detect scents at parts-per-trillion levels, even under forest canopies!
Diet
Turkey vultures are primarily carnivores, feeding on carrion. They are expert scavengers, foraging for recently dead animals, ranging from small mammals like mice and shrews to larger grazers. While they rarely kill prey themselves, they may occasionally feed on small, weak animals or eggs. They are not picky eaters, avoiding only carcasses that have begun to decay. These vultures also sometimes feed on washed-up fish or insects stranded in shallow water. Their diet is crucial for the health of the ecosystem, as they remove decaying matter and reduce the transmission of disease.
FUN FACT
Though they typically spend much of their time solitary, foraging independently or in small groups, during feeding times, large communal roosts are formed, sometimes including several thousand birds. These roosts serve as gathering spots for group foraging and social interaction. Turkey vultures have a unique and rather defensive behaviour: when threatened, they vomit partially digested meat. This acidic, foul-smelling substance is potent enough to deter most predators or unwelcome intruders. In hot weather, they employ a cooling method called "urohydrosis," where they defecate on their legs to lower their body temperature and kill off harmful bacteria they may have picked up from their meals. They also have a habit of spreading their wings in a horaltic stance to dry off or warm up, particularly after damp or rainy nights.
HABITAT
These versatile birds can be found across a wide range of habitats, from open forests to farmland, wetlands, deserts, and even urban areas. They are particularly common in areas with abundant carrion, such as roadsides or landfills, though they also nest in more secluded places, including caves, hollow trees, and abandoned buildings. Turkey vultures are well-adapted to living near human activity but prefer to nest far from civilisation. While they often forage near humans, they will seek out quiet, undisturbed areas for nesting. Their nests are not elaborate; they typically make do with a simple scrape in the soil or in leaf litter. These sites are often used year after year, sometimes for decades. Turkey vultures don't build nests in the traditional sense, but they are known to use the remnants of previous nests made by other animals.
LIFE SPAN
Turkey vultures can live up to 30 years.
