White Faced Whistling Tree Duck

White Faced Whistling Tree Duck

White-faced whistling tree ducks are gregarious, sociable birds, often gathering in noisy flocks that can sometimes number in the hundreds. They have a distinctive black-and-white head, a rich chestnut breast, and finely barred flanks. Males typically have a bright white face and throat, while females may have a slight rust-coloured tinge on the front of the head and neck. Their long neck and legs give them a goose-like appearance, and although they are sometimes called tree ducks, they rarely perch in trees, preferring sandbanks instead.

Diet

They are omnivorous, feeding primarily on seeds and plant matter. They also dive for underwater tubers, molluscs, small aquatic animals, and insects. Foraging is mostly done at night, and they are strong swimmers, using their webbed feet to manoeuvre underwater.
Fun Fact Icon

FUN FACT

There are eight different species of whistling duck, all named for their high-pitched, multisyllabic whistles which they use instead of quacking. White-faced whistling ducks form lifelong monogamous pairs, staying together even outside the breeding season. They strengthen their bond through mutual preening, and both parents share the responsibility of incubating the eggs and raising the ducklings.
