White Shouldered Starling
The white-shouldered starling is a small, stout songbird often found in open fields, farmlands, and areas near human habitation. It is named for the distinctive white patch on its shoulders. These birds are highly social and typically gather in large flocks. They have a fast, direct flight and move confidently on the ground, walking and running with ease.
Diet
White-shouldered starlings are omnivorous, feeding on a mix of fruits and insects, including caterpillars.
FUN FACT
Males and females have different plumage. The adult male has a soft brown head and breast, a white belly, blue eyes, and a bluish-grey bill. The female is darker, with brown extending from the head to the back and belly. Both sexes share white rumps, black flight feathers, and bright white wing coverts.
HABITAT
These birds are native to Asia and can be found in countries such as China, Japan, India, Thailand, and the Philippines. They prefer open landscapes with scattered trees, coastal areas, and built-up environments where they often perch on buildings, wires, and lamp posts. Unlike many other birds, they readily nest in human structures like old buildings and street lamp crevices, though they may also use tree holes in gardens and golf courses.
LIFE SPAN
Approximately 3 years.
