Yellow Shouldered Amazon Parrot

Yellow Shouldered Amazon Parrot

Yellow-shouldered Amazon parrots are highly sociable birds that often gather in pairs or small groups and roost communally in tall trees. They are known for their loud, raucous calls, which are harsher and less musical than those of other Amazon parrots. Easily recognisable by their green plumage, they have a distinctive yellow face, yellow shoulder patches, and orange markings on their wings. These parrots are medium-sized, measuring around 33 cm in length and weighing approximately 270 grams. Their eyes are a striking orange-red, surrounded by a pale grey eye ring.

These parrots have a naturally inquisitive and playful nature. During the breeding season, they form pairs and nest in natural cavities found in trees, cacti, or even rocky cliffs, laying between two and five eggs.
Habitat Icon

HABITAT

Native to South America, yellow-shouldered Amazon parrots have a very limited range. They are primarily found along the northern coast of Venezuela and on nearby islands such as Margarita Island. Unlike many other Amazon parrot species, they inhabit dry forests and desert shrublands, where they navigate landscapes of thorny vegetation and cacti. Once found in Aruba, they are now extinct there. Unfortunately, they are among the most threatened parrot species in Venezuela, facing dangers from habitat loss, illegal pet trade, and conflicts with farmers who view them as agricultural pests.
