Asian Short-Clawed Otter
The Asian short-clawed otter, also known as the Asian small-clawed otter, is the smallest of the 13 otter species. Native to Southeast Asia, this sociable mammal lives in groups of up to 15 individuals, typically centred around a monogamous pair. Both parents actively participate in raising their young. Unlike other otters, their claws do not extend beyond their digital pads, giving them exceptional dexterity for foraging. Their thick, muscular tails aid in swimming, and their small ears and nostrils can close when submerged.
Diet
These otters are omnivorous, feeding on fish, insects, crabs, molluscs, amphibians, and even small reptiles. Their partially webbed feet and sensitive digital pads allow them to detect prey in riverbeds or under rocks. They are known for using their paws, rather than their mouths, to catch and manipulate food. Some have even been observed using the sun’s heat to help open shellfish.
FUN FACT
Asian short-clawed otters are one of the most vocal otter species, communicating through at least 12 different calls, including greeting, mating, and alarm signals. They also use scent marking to establish territories, often stomping on communal latrines to spread their scent. They are playful creatures, frequently seen sliding down muddy banks, wrestling, and chasing each other – activities that help them develop hunting and social skills.
HABITAT
These otters are found across southern India, southern China, Southeast Asia, Indonesia, and the Philippines. They inhabit a variety of wetland environments, including rivers, streams, marshes, mangroves, and rice paddies. Unlike other otter species, they spend a significant amount of time on land, often travelling between water sources. Conservation efforts are crucial, as habitat destruction, pollution, and illegal pet trade pose serious threats to their survival.
LIFE SPAN
11 - 16 years.
