Azara Agouti

Azara Agouti

Azara’s agouti are small, shy mammals that resemble guinea pigs but have much longer legs. Named after the Spanish naturalist Félix de Azara, these rodents are found in Argentina, Paraguay, Bolivia, and Brazil. They have a brown, glossy coat with a whitish underside and coarse fur. While eating, they sit on their hind paws and use their front feet, each with five toes, to hold their food. Their hind feet, in contrast, have only three toes. Despite their timid nature, they are highly adaptable and can be found in forest patches within savannahs and lowland rainforests. When threatened, they make a loud barking noise. If this does not deter a predator, they make a quick escape, using their agility and excellent swimming skills to flee to safety. Known as "gardeners of the forest," they play a crucial role in seed dispersal by burying nuts and seeds, many of which grow into new plants.

Diet

Azara’s agoutis are herbivores, primarily eating fruits, seeds, nuts, roots, and leaves. They sometimes follow other animals, like primates, to feed on dropped fruit.
Fun Fact Icon

FUN FACT

Azara’s agoutis are the only mammals capable of opening a Brazil nut unaided, thanks to their exceptionally sharp teeth and strong jaws. This makes them vital for the distribution of Brazil nut trees.
