Berkshire Pigs
The Berkshire Pig is the oldest recorded breed of pig in the UK, originating in Reading, England. It was once a larger breed with more colour variations, but the modern Berkshire is a medium-sized pig, predominantly black with white markings on its face, legs, and the tips of its tail. Known for their intelligence and gentle nature, they are sometimes called the "lady’s pig."
Berkshires are prick-eared pigs with a distinctive black coat that helps protect them from sunburn. Adult boars can weigh around 280 kg, while sows reach approximately 220 kg. Though today's Berkshire is black with white markings, the original breed was reddish or sandy-coloured, and some pigs still show traces of this in their white patches.
Pigs are highly social animals and require the company of others to thrive. Berkshire pigs are particularly good-natured and form strong bonds with their caretakers.
Diet
Berkshires are omnivores and eat a wide variety of plant and animal foods.
FUN FACT
A male pig is called a "boar," while a young female is a "gilt" until she has her first litter, after which she becomes a "sow."
HABITAT
Originally from England, Berkshire pigs have been selectively bred over centuries. Their thick fat layer contributes to their hardiness, making them well-suited to various climates. The breed has remained pure for over 200 years, with its distinctive colouring and high-quality meat coming from a historic cross with Siamese and Chinese pigs.
LIFE SPAN
Berkshire sows have a gestation period of about 116 days – slightly longer than other pig breeds. They typically give birth to litters of 8–10 piglets and are excellent mothers, providing ample milk and attentive care. Berkshires can live between 12 and 15 years.
