Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs

Black-Tailed Prairie Dogs

Black-tailed prairie dogs are small, burrowing rodents with tan fur and a lighter, buff-coloured belly. As their name suggests, the tips of their tails are sparsely covered with black hair. They have short ears, large dark eyes, and strong legs designed for digging. These highly social animals live in large colonies, or "towns," and communicate using a sophisticated system of warning calls. Their burrows provide shelter for over 150 other species, making them an ecologically significant keystone species.

Diet

Black-tailed prairie dogs are herbivores that primarily consume grasses, sedges, roots, flowering plants, and seeds. They favour plants high in moisture content, which helps them stay hydrated without the need to drink water. Occasionally, they may eat insects such as grasshoppers and beetles.
Fun Fact Icon

FUN FACT

Prairie dogs are named for their barking alarm calls, which vary depending on the type of predator they spot. They are also known for their complex social behaviours, which include greeting one another with nose-to-nose contact and taking turns standing guard. Their digging activities aerate the soil, improving its quality, while their dung adds nitrogen, further enriching the land.
Habitat Icon

HABITAT

Black-tailed prairie dogs inhabit the grasslands of Central and Western North America, including short- and mid-grass prairies. Their range once stretched from Canada to Mexico, but habitat loss and eradication efforts have significantly reduced their populations. They prefer dry, open plains with fine or medium-textured soil, which is ideal for burrow construction. They are commonly found near river flats and in areas where sagebrush, greasewood, and prickly pear grow. Their abandoned burrows provide shelter for other animals, such as burrowing owls, snakes, and rabbits.
