Brazilian Guinea Pig
Brazilian guinea pigs are wild relatives of domestic guinea pigs. Also known as cavies, they are medium-sized rodents with stout bodies and almost non-existent tails. They have four toes on their front feet and three on their hind feet. Brazilian guinea pigs are diurnal and crepuscular, meaning they are active during the early morning, evening, and parts of the day. They live in small family groups consisting of a male, one or two females, and their young. Unlike some rodents, they do not burrow but instead navigate through tunnels and pathways in dense ground vegetation. These guinea pigs communicate using high-pitched squeals and scent marking, which helps them establish territories and warn others of potential threats.
Diet
Brazilian guinea pigs are herbivores and generalist grazers, primarily feeding on true grasses but also consuming seeds, leaves, stems, and occasionally roots or tubers. They forage in groups, which helps them maximise grazing time while remaining alert to predators.
FUN FACT
Newborn Brazilian guinea pigs are born fully furred, with their eyes open, and are capable of running within hours. By three days old, they begin eating solid food, and by five days, they can survive without their mother.
HABITAT
Brazilian guinea pigs are found across South America, with their range extending from Colombia, Ecuador, and Venezuela to Argentina. They inhabit open grasslands, savannahs, and montane regions, including the highlands of the Andes. They prefer areas with thick ground cover but can also adapt to disturbed habitats. Unlike some other South American species, they do not occur in tropical rainforests.
