Cameroon Sheep
Cameroon sheep have a unique coat of thick, tight hair instead of wool, which helps them adapt to their environment. During autumn, they develop an extra undercoat for warmth in colder months. Originally bred in West Africa, this ancient breed has since been domesticated in parts of Europe, where they are often raised for meat production, used as grazers, or kept as companion animals. They are best recognised by their brown bodies with black markings on their heads, bellies, and legs. Rams have distinctive spiral horns and a thick mane, while ewes do not have horns.
Diet
As herbivores, Cameroon sheep primarily feed on grass but will also eat leaves and other vegetation found in their habitat.
FUN FACT
One lamb is usually born after a pregnancy of around five months, though twins can sometimes occur. However, since ewes have only two teats, they are best suited to raising single lambs or twins. Cameroon sheep also have large, wide-set eyes that give them an impressive 270-degree field of vision, helping them stay alert for potential predators.
HABITAT
Originally from Cameroon and other regions of West and Central Africa, these sheep thrive in grassland environments. Today, they can also be found in parts of Europe, where they have been domesticated. They are flock animals with a strong instinct to stay together for safety.
LIFE SPAN
