Capybara
Capybaras are the world’s largest rodents, growing up to 1.3m long and weighing 35–79 kg. The lesser capybara is smaller, reaching about 1m and 28 kg. Native to South America, they are closely related to guinea pigs and rock cavies. Their name comes from the Tupi word ka'apiûara ("grass-eater"), while their scientific name means "water pig" in Greek.
ADAPTATIONS & BEHAVIOUR
Capybaras are highly adapted to an aquatic lifestyle, even mating in water. Their webbed feet help them move both on land and in water, and their eyes, ears, and nose are positioned high on their heads for easy swimming. They can hold their breath for up to five minutes and sometimes sleep with their noses resting on riverbanks. Despite their stocky build, they can run at speeds of 35 km/h. They are social animals, living in herds and often seen with birds and other wildlife perched on their backs. They communicate through purring, barking, whistling, and teeth chattering, using sounds to signal danger, approval, or movement.Diet
Capybaras are herbivores, feeding on grasses, water plants, bark, and sugarcane, with their teeth growing continuously to handle tough plants. In dry seasons, they eat grains, melons, and squashes. They also eat their own faeces to help them digest their fibrous meals.
FUN FACT
Females have one litter per year, in which they can have up to 8 young (known as pups). The gestation period is around 150 days. All the pups within a group tend to stay together in a crèche and suckle from any nursing female.
HABITAT
Capybaras inhabit wetlands, grasslands, and rainforests. Predators include jaguars, pumas, caimans, and birds of prey. They also face threats from habitat destruction and illegal poaching.
LIFE SPAN
Capybaras can live up to 12 years.
