Dwarf Mongoose
Dwarf mongooses live in groups ranging from 3 to 30 individuals, forming a highly social and structured community. Each member has a specific role, such as acting as a sentry, grooming others, or caring for young. These groups are led by a dominant female who, along with her mate, suppresses the reproduction of other members to maintain hierarchy. They are diurnal animals, meaning they are active during the day and return to their dens – usually abandoned termite mounds, rock crevices, or fallen logs – before nightfall.
Diet
Dwarf mongooses are primarily insectivorous, feeding on beetles, termites, grasshoppers, and larvae. However, they also prey on small rodents, lizards, young birds, and even eggs. They have developed unique hunting techniques, such as using their forelimbs to smash bird eggs against hard surfaces to access the contents. While they do not rely on water, they will drink if a source is available.
FUN FACT
Dwarf mongooses do not stay in one place permanently. They roam across a home range of about 75 acres, using multiple den sites rather than a fixed burrow. Their society is highly vocal, and they use a variety of calls to communicate, including specific alarm calls that differentiate between terrestrial and aerial predators. They even have cooperative relationships with birds such as hornbills, which act as sentries to warn of danger in exchange for feeding opportunities.
HABITAT
Dwarf mongooses are endemic to Africa, with a range spanning from Somalia and Ethiopia to South Africa and Namibia. They thrive in savannahs, dry woodlands, and bushy scrublands, particularly in areas with plenty of termite mounds, which they use for shelter, lookout points, and food. In the absence of termite mounds, they adapt by living in rocky crevices or among fallen logs.
LIFE SPAN
In the wild, dwarf mongooses can live up to 10 years for males and 14 years for females.
