Eurasian Harvest Mouse
The Eurasian harvest mouse is the UK's tiniest rodent and one of the smallest in Europe, measuring between 55 to 75 mm in length, with a nearly hairless tail that is almost as long as its body. These agile climbers use their prehensile tails for support, allowing them to scurry up grass stems with ease. They build round nests woven from grass, usually positioned at least 30 cm above the ground, but sometimes as high as 130 cm during breeding season.
Diet
Harvest mice are omnivorous and eat a variety of seeds, berries, and insects. Their diet also includes roots, moss, fungi, and larvae such as caterpillars and grasshoppers. In the summer, they feed opportunistically on whatever is available, while in winter, they may seek out human food stores, sometimes sheltering in barns or grain silos when natural food sources are scarce.
FUN FACT
The Eurasian harvest mouse is the only British mammal with a prehensile tail, which it uses like a fifth limb to grip plant stems while moving through dense vegetation. It has large eyes and ears, helping it detect even the slightest movement or sound. When threatened, it may freeze in place to blend into its surroundings or drop suddenly to the ground to escape predators.
HABITAT
These tiny mice are found across Europe and northern Asia, from Spain to Japan, and prefer tall grass habitats such as reed beds, meadows, and hedgerows. While they originally lived in humid grasslands, human development has forced them to adapt to living along roadsides, in grain fields, or even in burrows when their natural shelters are destroyed. Unlike some small mammals, they do not hibernate and remain active throughout the year, sometimes building ground-level nests in colder months for warmth and protection.
LIFE SPAN
Approximately 18 months.
