Highland Cattle

Highland Cattle

The Highland is a Scottish breed of rustic cattle that originated in the Highlands and Outer Hebrides as early as the 6th century. With long horns and a shaggy coat, it is one of Britain’s oldest and most recognisable breeds. The Highland breed of Cattle has a distinguished ancestry, not only in its homeland of Western Scotland, but also in many far-flung parts of the world. It holds the title of the oldest registered cattle breed in the world, with written records dating back to the 18th century. Highland cattle have long, wavy coats in many different colours including red, black, and tan. Males have thick, forward-curving horns, while females’ horns are thinner and curve upwards. Their long fringe, or “dossan,” protects their eyes from flies and weather. Bulls can weigh up to 800 kg, cows up to 500 kg.
Their thick, double-layered coat has an oily outer layer and soft undercoat for warmth, so they don’t need to store excess fat. Their coat sheds in warmer climates. Highlands are friendly and docile, rarely fighting within their herd. However, mothers can be protective of their young. A group of Highland cattle is called a "Fold," named after the open shelters they use in winter.

Diet

Highland cattle are herbivores, eating leaves, shrubs, and tough forage, which makes them ideal candidates for conservational grazing in certain areas. In winter, they use their horns to dig through snow for food.
Fun Fact Icon

FUN FACT

Highland cattle were once black, but Queen Victoria’s preference for red made it the dominant colour. Their ability to thrive on poor forage makes them one of the hardiest cattle breeds.
Habitat Icon

HABITAT

These cattle thrive in Scotland’s mountainous grasslands with high annual rainfall and freezing winds.

LIFE SPAN

Highland cows breed beyond 18 years, raising over 15 calves in their lifetime. They calve independently, giving birth to small but fast-growing calves (22-34 kg). Their lifespan is 15-22 years.
