House Mouse

House Mouse

House mice are one of the most widespread rodent species and a common pest in human environments. Their success is due to their rapid reproduction, ability to squeeze into small spaces, and adaptability to different diets. Originally from Central Asia, they have spread worldwide through human activity and are now found in nearly every urban and rural setting. While truly wild populations still exist, most house mice today live in close association with humans, thriving in man-made environments. Females can have up to 10 litters a year, with each litter consisting of four to eight young. Baby mice are born blind and hairless, but they grow fur within 10 days, open their eyes at 14 days, and reach maturity within 5-7 weeks.

Diet

House mice are omnivorous and will eat human food, seeds, plants, invertebrates, and carrion. They also consume berries, nuts, fungi, and even their own droppings to extract additional nutrients. Unlike many animals, they cannot vomit, so they are particularly selective about what they eat.

FUN FACT

To compensate for their poor eyesight, mice rely heavily on their other senses – especially hearing and touch. They navigate by staying close to vertical surfaces, a behaviour known as thigmotaxis. Their tails help with balance, and when eating, fighting, or surveying their surroundings, they rear up on their hind legs, using their tails for support in a posture called "tripoding."

HABITAT

House mice prefer hidden areas near food sources and can be found in wall voids, attics, sheds, and crawl spaces. As a commensal species, they commonly live in human-made structures such as warehouses, factories, farm buildings, and even cold storage facilities. In outdoor settings, they may burrow into the ground or nest in cracks and crevices. Their nests are made of shredded soft materials like paper, fabric, or grass.
