Plains Zebra

Plains Zebra

Plains zebras are social animals that live in large herds. These herds often consist of family groups and bachelor males, and when migrating to new feeding grounds, they may form "super herds" with thousands of individuals. A dominant stallion leads each family group, while a high-ranking female takes charge when travelling. The species is recognisable by its black-and-white striped coat, with each zebra having a unique pattern, similar to human fingerprints. Their ears are highly expressive, moving in different directions to communicate mood and intent.

Diet

Plains zebras are herbivores and primarily graze on grass, but they also eat bark, roots, stems, and occasionally leaves and twigs. They are less selective than other grazers, meaning they can eat fibrous grasses that many animals avoid. Their digestive system allows them to process food quickly, making them essential in grassland ecosystems by paving the way for more selective grazers like wildebeests. During the dry season, they rely more on hardy stems and herbs to survive.

FUN FACT

There are many theories about why zebras have stripes, with one of the most popular being that the pattern helps them avoid predators. The stripes may also confuse biting insects like flies, making it harder for them to land. Plains zebras are highly social and will slow down for sick or injured members, even backtracking to bring a stray member back to the herd. When a foal gets separated from its mother, it will walk from group to group, touching noses with each zebra until it finds her.

HABITAT

Plains zebras inhabit the grasslands and savanna woodlands of south and eastern Africa. They are found in Kenya, Tanzania, Ethiopia, Sudan, Uganda, Rwanda, Botswana, Zimbabwe, Zambia, Mozambique, Malawi, Namibia, and northern South Africa. Unlike the Mountain Zebra, which prefers rocky terrain, plains zebras thrive in open grasslands and light woodlands, often staying close to water sources. Their range can be vast, covering thousands of hectares as they migrate between grazing areas.
