Small Spotted Genet
The small-spotted genet, also known as the common genet, is a sleek, cat-like carnivore native to Africa. Despite its feline appearance, it is more closely related to the civet and mongoose. Recognisable by its elongated body and long tail – often as long as or longer than its body – it moves with remarkable agility. This nocturnal and secretive animal has a distinct black-and-white coat, with bold black spots that elongate into stripes towards the tail. It also has retractable claws, enabling it to climb trees with ease, though it spends much of its time hunting on the ground.
Diet
The small-spotted genet is primarily carnivorous but adapts to an opportunistic diet. It feeds on small mammals, birds, eggs, rodents, and amphibians, as well as insects, millipedes, centipedes, and scorpions. Though classified as a carnivore, it occasionally consumes fruit when available.
FUN FACT
Small-spotted genets have highly flexible bodies, allowing them to squeeze through any opening larger than their heads. Similar to civets, they produce scent secretions for communication and, when threatened, can release a foul-smelling substance to deter predators.
HABITAT
This species thrives in various environments across Africa, favouring dry woodlands, savannas, forests, and dense riverine vegetation. While they often shelter in trees, they are more commonly found in rocky outcrops, burrows, or hollow logs. Their range extends through southern Africa, but they are notably absent from the west coastal regions of Namibia and South Africa. Solitary by nature, they are mostly seen alone except during mating season or when a mother is raising her young.
