Tayra
Tayras are agile, weasel-like mammals native to tropical and subtropical forests. Their slender bodies and long, bushy tails give them a sleek appearance, while their strong limbs make them excellent climbers. They are diurnal but may also be active in the evening or at night. Tayras are often seen moving quickly on the ground or through trees, travelling alone or in small groups of up to four individuals.
Diet
Tayras are omnivorous and have a highly varied diet. They hunt small mammals, reptiles, and birds and will also eat insects, eggs, honey, and carrion when available. Fruit is an important part of their diet, and they have been observed climbing trees to reach ripe produce.
FUN FACT
These energetic animals can travel more than 6 km in a single night! Despite their limited eyesight, they navigate dense forests with ease and have been known to descend smooth tree trunks from heights of over 40 m.
HABITAT
Tayras are found throughout Latin America, ranging from Mexico to much of South America, excluding Uruguay and parts of Argentina and Brazil. They thrive in tropical and subtropical forests but can also be found in secondary growth areas, plantations, and croplands. While they prefer forested environments, they may cross open grasslands at night to move between wooded areas.
LIFE SPAN
Tayras can live up to 18 years.
