MAINTENANCE OPERATIVE
Part Time | Salary Competitive and dependent on experience
We are seeking an experienced, practical and reliable Maintenance Operative to join our team on a part-time basis, working three days per week.
This is a hands-on role working across a busy wildlife park and 350-acre estate. The successful candidate will be capable of working independently, solving problems on their own initiative and completing maintenance tasks to a high standard with minimal supervision.
This is not a trainee position. Due to the nature of the role, applicants must already possess strong practical skills and experience using tools, equipment and maintenance techniques safely and competently.

Key Responsibilities
- Fencing repairs and installation
- General estate and building maintenance
- Carpentry and handyman tasks
- Minor plumbing repairs and maintenance
- Minor electrical repairs within competence
- Operating hand and power tools safely
- Painting, decorating and repairs
- Routine inspections and preventative maintenance
- Assisting with improvement projects
- Maintaining safe working practices at all times
Requirements
- Proven practical maintenance experience
- Confident and competent using a wide range of hand and power tools
- Experience carrying out fencing, repair and construction work
- Ability to work alone without constant supervision
- Strong problem-solving skills and practical common sense
- Excellent awareness of health and safety requirements
- Ability to assess risks and work safely at all times
- Reliable, trustworthy and self-motivated
- Physically fit and capable of working outdoors in all weather conditions
- Full UK driving licence

Seasonal Wildlife Park and Estate Gardener
Full Time fixed term contract | £12.71 per hour
We are looking for an experienced gardener to join our friendly team here in our 350 acre Wildlife Park and Estate on the River Thames on a full-time fixed-term seasonal contract until the end of October .
Reporting directly to our Head of Gardens, you can expect to carry out general garden maintenance duties as well as being involved in skilled garden work.
From our beautiful Japanese Gardens, to our garden borders surrounding our inner lake, you will be an integral part of a small team responsible for the up-keep of a wide variety of plants throughout the park.
Working to tight time scales & deadlines, maintaining the highest of standards and working in a safe manner, you can also expect to be interacting with our visitors, answering queries about the Park and gardens.

Reporting to: Head of Gardens
Location: Beale Wildlife Park & Estate, Lower Basildon, Berkshire
Job Type: Full Time fixed term contract
Salary: £12.71 per hour
Shift pattern: 40 hours per week, with weekend/bank holiday duties on a rota basis
Key Responsibilities
- To ensure the upkeep and development of all plants and planted displays to the highest standard.
- Follow the head gardeners instructions, and written daily tasks.
- Ensure the routine maintenance of the planting areas.
- Responsible for the appropriate propagation of plants.
- Responsible for the feeding, watering, weeding, planting and pest control schedules of all planted areas. This includes all garden skills such as pruning, digging and strimming
- Willing to learn and be a good communicator, both orally and written.
- Capable of meeting the position’s physical demands and expected to work outside in all weather conditions.
Person Specification
- Existing knowledge and experience of horticulture is essential.
- Prior experience of using garden machinery useful but not essential, (tractor, Strimmer, hedge cutter)
- NPTC Spraying licence PA1and PA6 would be an advantage
- Previous customer service experience, with excellent interpersonal skills.
- Well organised. Able to follow work routines with minimal supervision
- Empathy with the mission, vision and values of Beale Wildlife Park, with genuine interest and knowledge of the work of the Park.
- Physically fit due to the manual work involved with the role
- Full, clean driving licence.
- The successful candidate will be required to undertake a DBS check and appropriate Right to Work document(s) prior to commencing employment.
