Water Vole

Water Vole

The water vole is a much-loved British mammal, known by many as ‘Ratty’ in the children’s classic The Wind in the Willows. Unfortunately, the future of this charming riverside creature is in peril; the water vole needs urgent help to survive in the UK.

WHY ARE THEY IMPORTANT?

Water voles are a vital part of river ecosystems. Their burrowing, feeding and movements help to create conditions for other animals and plants to thrive – a bit like beavers do, but on a much smaller scale.

How Beale Park is helping

As part of the Water Vole recovery project (Berks, Bucks and Oxon), Beale Wildlife Park are monitoring and recording Mink activity within the estate in the hope to get Water Voles back.

HOW CAN YOU HELP?

You can help by spreading the word about this species and the crisis that it is facing. More people that know the reasons why the species are facing extinction the more we can do to help save the species.
Let us know if you have seen either Water Voles or American Mink or make a donation by clicking here to our Conservation Projects Fund.
