KS1 WORKSHOPS

Amazing Africa

A workshop about the amazing wildlife in the African Savannah

Learning outcomes:

  • Know the seasonal changes in the African Savannah.
  • Understand how animals are suited to a habitat.
  • Identify some common African animals including predators and prey.

  • Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
  • How these animals suit their habitat.

Geography:

  • Seasons in the UK compared to Africa.
  • Location of hot and cold areas of the world in relation to the Equator.

Predators and prey

A workshop about food and feeding.

Learning outcomes:

  • Learning how different animals have different diets.
  • How they are suited to these different diets.
  • How to create and understand a food chain.

  • Identify and name a variety of common animals that are carnivores, herbivores and omnivores.
  • Describe how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals.
  • Use the idea of a simple food chain.
  • Identify and name different sources of food.

Animal care

How to care for animals both at home and in the Zoo.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the basic needs of animals.
  • To be able to explain why some animals do not make good pets.
  • How we provide care for animals at home and at the park.

  • Identify common animals.

Variety of life

Fur, Feathers, Scales and Skin. How we group animals on their physical features.

Learning outcomes:

  • To understand why we group animals on their physical features.
  • To be able to group animals with or without a backbone.
  • Be able to explain the body coverings of the different types of animals.

Science:

  • Describe and compare the structure of a variety of common animals.
  • Including: Invertebrates, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals.

Habitats

How our woodland habitats in the UK compared to tropical rainforests abroad.

Learning outcomes:

  • Understand the term habitat and micro habitat.
  • Know how the seasons and conditions are different depending on globe position.
  • Identify and sort native and rainforest animals.

Science:

  • Identify that most living things live in habitats to which they are suited.
  • Describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of animals.
  • Identify and name a variety of animals in their habitats, including microhabitats.

Geography:

  • Understand geographical similarities and differences of the UK and a contrasting non-European country.
  • Identify seasonal weather patterns and the location of hot and cold places of the world.
