KS2 WORKSHOPS

African Savannah

What is life like for animals in the African Savannah.

Learning outcomes:

  • Know the seasonal changes in the African Savannah.
  • Understand how animals are suited to a habitat.
  • Adaptation of Savannah animals (upper KS2).
  • Threats to animals and their habitats.

Links to curriculum:

Science:

  • Pupils should identify how the habitat changes throughout the year.
  • Pupils should explore examples of human impact on environments.
  • Compare and contrast the diets of different animals, grouping animals according to diet.
  • Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.

Geography:

  • Locational knowledge.
  • Describe and understand key aspects of physical geography.

    Food and feeding

    Learning outcomes:

    • To understand animals, have different diets to which they are suited.
    • How we can group animals based on their diet.
    • How food chains work and be able to identify producers, predators and prey.
      .

    Links to curriculum:

    Science:

    • Identify that animals need the right types and amount of nutrition, and that they cannot make their own food.
    • Compare and contrast the diets of different animalsGroup animals according to what they eat.
    • Different types of teeth and their simple functions.
    • Construct and interpret a variety of food chains, identifying producers, predators and prey

    Endangered species

    Endangered species and their habitats

    Learning outcomes:

    • To be able to explain the importance of animals and plants.
    • To be able to understand and name the threats to wildlife.
    • Come up with ideas of how to help wildlife and their habitats.
    • Why morally we should help the environment and wildlife.

    Links to curriculum:

    Science:

    • Recognise that environments can change and that this can sometimes pose dangers to living things.
    • Pupils should explore examples of human impact (both positive and negative) on environments.

    Citizenship:

    • Preparing to play an active role as citizens.

    Adaptation and evolution (Upper KS2)

    Learning outcomes:

    • Understand what is meant by adaptation.
    • How certain adaptation can be advantageous and can lead to evolution.
    • Explain how living things have changed over time and that animals are suited to their environments.

    Links to curriculum:

    Science:

    • Evolution and inheritance recognise that living things have changed over time and that fossils provide information about living things that inhabited the Earth millions of years ago.
    • Recognise that living things produce offspring of the same kind, but normally offspring vary and are not identical to their parents.
    • Identify how animals and plants are adapted to suit their environment in different ways and that adaptation may lead to evolution.

    Classification (Upper KS2)

    Learning outcomes:

    • To be able to explain how we group animals and the importance of this.
    • To understand the different groups of invertebrates and vertebrates.
    • Identify the physical attributes that put them into these groups.
    • Understand the importance of Carl Linnaeus.

    Links to curriculum:

    Science:

    • Describe how living things are classified into broad groups according to common observable characteristics.
    • Give reasons for classifying animals based on specific characteristics.
    • Pupils might find out about the significance of the work of scientists such as Carl Linnaeus, a pioneer of classification.
