A Conservation Win at Beale Wildlife Park

We’re absolutely thrilled to introduce the latest — and perhaps cutest — additions to the Beale family: two baby binturongs! Born on 16th February to first-time parents Rosie and Ted, these twins are already stealing hearts with their playful antics and curious personalities.

If you’re unfamiliar with binturongs (also affectionately called bearcats), you’re not alone. These mysterious tree-dwellers hail from Southeast Asia and are often misunderstood — partly because they’re rarely seen in the wild or in zoos.

But here’s why this birth is so special.

A Rare Arrival

Binturongs are classified as Vulnerable by the IUCN Red List, facing threats from deforestation, habitat loss, and the illegal wildlife trade. Successful breeding in captivity is a rare and significant conservation achievement — and Rosie and Ted have made us incredibly proud.

This is Rosie’s first litter, and she’s been nothing short of amazing. Throughout her pregnancy, she allowed our animal care team to perform regular checks and has continued to be a calm, attentive mum. Dad Ted met the twins a few weeks later, and the introduction went smoothly — with a few cheeky nose boops from the little ones!

“The keepers have been so dedicated to the species over the last 3 years and all their hard work has paid off with the success of Rosie and Ted becoming first-time parents to Poppy and Bear. It’s a huge accomplishment for the park and the species; it’s been a privilege to watch the general public learn more about one of our more unfamiliar animals during this exciting time too!” – Chloe, Animal Keeper.

Why Binturongs Matter

These fascinating mammals play a crucial role in their native rainforest ecosystems. They’re one of the only animals that can digest the seeds of strangler fig trees — helping to disperse seeds and support forest regeneration.

By welcoming these binturong babies, we’re not just celebrating new life — we’re reinforcing the importance of conservation through education, captive breeding, and awareness.

“Well worth the wait for a vulnerable species. Super rewarding too!” – Amy, Animal Keeper

“The bintlets have been so great, they’re a first for the park and great contribution to the breeding programme. They’re growing so quick and becoming quite a handful, thanks to Rosie and Ted being such great parents.”– Bryony, Animal Keeper.

Come Meet Them!

You can now catch glimpses of the twins in their enclosure. Bring your camera — there’s a good chance you’ll see them practicing their climbing or having a sibling wrestle!

It’s the perfect time to visit, explore the zoo, and meet the newest members of our Beale family.

“Our 2 Bintlets are continuing thrive & become characters with the help of their amazing parents, Ted & Rosie. Both playing a huge role in the conservation of their species.” – Matt, Animal Keeper.
