Sustainability

Sustainability At Our Zoo

At our zoo, sustainability isn’t just something we talk about – it’s how we operate every day. From how we care for our animals to how we grow our gardens, we are committed to protecting the planet for future generations, both human and wild.

Energy Use

We’re working to reduce our energy consumption across the park:
● We use low-energy lighting and continue upgrading to energy-efficient systems wherever possible.
● Our long-term goal is to increase the use of renewable energy sources and reduce our carbon footprint.

Peat-Free Gardening

We are proud to use peat-free compost throughout our gardens and landscaped areas. Peat extraction destroys critical habitats and releases stored carbon, so by avoiding it, we help protect fragile ecosystems and reduce environmental impact.

Animal Waste Composting

Our animals do their part too! Waste from our farm and hoofstock animals is collected and managed in our dedicated muck heap. This natural fertiliser is composted and then reused across the zoo, especially in our:
● Flower beds
● Wildlife-friendly garden areas
● Pumpkin patch and maize maze, where we grow seasonal crops for both display and enrichment.

Seasonal Crop Use

This year, we grow our own pumpkins and cultivate a maize maze—both popular with visitors and beneficial to the environment:
● We use our own compost to feed the soil naturally.
● Leftover crops are either used as animal enrichment or composted again, completing the cycle.

Waste & Recycling

We actively reduce, reuse, and recycle across all zoo operations:
● Recycling bins are available for visitors and staff.
● We avoid single-use plastics wherever possible.
● Organic and green waste is composted on-site.

Conservation & Biodiversity

Our zoo is home to many rare and endangered species. We:
● Participate in global breeding and conservation programs.
● Protect natural habitats within the park to support native wildlife and pollinators.
● Use only sustainable, wildlife-friendly products for landscaping and maintenance.

Getting Here Sustainably

We encourage greener ways to travel:
● Cycle parking is available on site.
● We promote the use of public transport and car sharing.

Working Together for a Greener Future

By choosing to visit our zoo, you’re helping us support sustainable practices, protect wildlife, and inspire change. Sustainability is a journey—and we’re always looking for ways to do better.
