The laughing kookaburra is the largest member of the kingfisher family and was once known as the Giant Kingfisher. Unlike
the rest of the family, kookaburras are plainly coloured, with large beaks, and small flashes of blue.
Its most prominent feature is its amazing
voice. Also known as “the Bushman’s alarm
clock”, its call can be heard far and wide at
dawn and dusk across the Australian bush.
This call is used to communicate with its
family groups, and to state its territory.
The laughing kookaburra is famous for
eating snakes up to 3 feet long! They
will grab it behind the head and smack
it against the ground. Kookaburras
will also give snakes to their chicks to
teach them how to hunt
